About Us

The Georgetown Center for Trauma and the Community is focused on improving the mental health of low-income women and their families in the Washington DC area who have been exposed to very stressful and traumatic events, like physical and sexual assault and abuse, life-threatening accidents, violent loss, and immigration-related trauma. The Center for Trauma, housed in the Department of Psychiatry at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, addresses this issue by fostering research that focuses on how to deliver low-cost mental health interventions that are effective in primary care and social service settings with low-income clients. Our work is supported by a developing center grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. We have ongoing collaborative relationships with primary care settings in the District of Columbia (Unity Health Care Inc.), Montgomery County, Maryland (Primary Care Coalition), and Prince George's County, Maryland (Department of Health, Division of Maternal and Child Health and Greater Baden Medical Services), and seek ongoing input and feedback from community-based clinicians and consumers. Working with a cadre of national experts, the center provides research training for junior faculty from multiple departments and schools within Georgetown, including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Neurology, and Nursing and Health Studies, and other community institutions. We also collaborate with The Center for Mental Health Outreach in the Department of Psychiatry, which raises funds to provide mental health services to low-income individuals in community primary care settings, to develop strong community networks and to evaluate service delivery.
