Krupnick, J.L. (2000).  The assessment of functional outcomes in cost-effectiveness of psychotherapy studies.  In:  N.E. Miller & K. Magruder (Eds.). The cost effectiveness of psychotherapy:  Developing clinical and services research models in an era of health care reform (pp. 182-191). New York: Oxford University Press.

In an era of escalating concern about health care expenditures and uncertainty about the value of mental health treatments, research data documenting the broad range of effects produced by psychological interventions are crucial. Accordingly, this chapter aims to (a) review the state of the art in functional outcome measurement in psychotherapy and (b) emphasize routine inclusion of functional and performance measures across all investigations of psychosocial intervention. The pros and cons of existing instruments, reviews of measures adopted by managed-care companies to track outcomes, and recommendations for new measure development will be addressed.
